10 Stupid Internet Hoaxes That People Actually Believed
4. Unlimited Energy For Everyone
Back in 2006, a company called Steorn Ltd announced online that it had managed to create a source of free, unlimited energy. They claimed that they had managed this through the use of time variant magnetic interactions. Naturally, just about everyone with the remotest idea of scientific theory answered the announcement with scepticism. The companys reputation was at stake with this bold claim though, so it was to faint curiosity that the company said that they would make a press demonstration of their technology. The demonstration was a total disaster, and the machine just didnt work. Steorn has since made further claims, even bringing in a jury of scientists to test it out (they unanimously said it didnt work). The whole fiasco has since been referred to as an elaborate hoax, although no one seems to know why the registered company would bother.
