10 Stupid Things Brits Think About Americans

5. Americans Are Racist

http://youtu.be/9Do6xGh04aA Welcome back to 1960! A great deal rides on this slide, as one false slip could see you turn around here and have me removed from this website. At all costs, I have to avoid the phrase "I'm not racist, but...". However, in relation to America, there has been a great deal of British discussion over the white, middle-class, suburban outlook that a great deal of the American Dream has surrounding it. The fact of the matter is that in America there is a large African-American contingent, large Italian-American portion, and a large Hispanic section of the population. In every country, a small minority of people is always prone to believe that their ethnicity is far better than any others, basically because their brains can only comprehend the concept of colour. In fact, as far as recent history is concerned, racist demonstrations in Eastern Europe have drawn much of the most heated criticism. And we in Britain can't really call ourselves any better until John Terry disappears. But, in our defence, the short history of the American people has meant that all of their racist actions have received great exposure on the global stage. We have all seen the appalling images of lynching and the Ku Klux Klan, and the efforts of Martin Luther King to address the situation. But this is no longer the 1960's, and there is now a black President of the USA, which is a remarkable step. However, don't say that because you've had a black President makes you less racist than the British; that's like us saying the Americans are sexist because we've had a female Prime Minister, or at least as close to a woman as you can get.
