Hailing from the swamps of Australia, the Bunyip is a creature of Aboriginal mythology that has dragged itself, flippers and all, into reality. Translating to ‘devil’ or ‘evil spirit’, the name denotes the viscous nature of the creature - one that feasts on those that wander too close to its watery home.

Little is known of the true nature of a Bunyip, with many different claims upon what the creature actually looks like, as communities are reportedly too frightened of the monster to take down proper details.

Combinations of alligator, horse, and even birds have been used in varying quantities, but it’s universally agreed to be an aquatic creature, even if its presentation in its underwater home might be confusing to those that do catch sight of it.

European settlers first started recording sightings of strange swamp-dwelling monsters in the 1800s, but the legend of the Bunyip stretches much further back in history. Now, the creature forms part of Australia’s national identity, appearing across multiple written and video formats in varying extremes.

The equivalent to Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster, the Bunyip is Australian through and through - it’s another creature to add to the ever-expanding list of things that will kill you in the world’s most deadly country. No one is surprised.
