7. Why We Yawn

We bet that just reading the title of this entry made you involuntarily yawn, huh. Well, we did when we were writing it, too, so don't feel too silly. Do feel silly, however, about the fact that this seemingly innocuous reflex we've been exhibiting for as long as humans have been around has absolutely no explanation. We have no idea why we yawn, and we have no idea why yawning is so contagious, either. People yawn in all sorts of situations.

We yawn when we wake up, we yawn when we're tired, we yawn when we're bored. It's an uncontrollable reflex. Sprinters and weightlifters will also find themselves yawning during a workout, which you would've thought was a time when you're the exact opposite of tried and lethargic. Bored, maybe, depending on what's on the telly at the gym. Humans aren't the only creatures who yawn, either; in fact it's pretty common amongst the animal kingdom. And we've no idea why any of those things yawn either.

There are theories, just like with the sailing stones. People have suggested that opening your mouth all wide, like you're getting your teeth done, might have something to do with the regulation of carbon dioxide in your lungs. Which we were pretty sure was already pretty well covered by the whole breathing in, breathing out respiratory system we've got going here, and also doesn't explain why yawning is so contagious? So there you go. We have no idea why we yawn. And you better not be doing that no because you're bored.
