10 Things We Learned From Bret Weinstein On The Joe Rogan Experience

9. Defund Or Invest In The Police?

Weinstein suggested that the words Black Lives Matter had started to mean more than they initially did, stating that 'for some reasons, it means abolish the police'. He followed this up by claiming this was quite possibly the stupidest proposal he'd ever heard.

Rogan then went on to talk about the defunding of the police in Minneapolis, asking Weinstein what is being put in place as a replacement? The former biology professor admitted he didn't really know, before revealing he's totally on board with a complete rethink of the way the U.S. does policing. However, he feels withdrawing the police first would be absolutely insane.

Jocko Willink - a former navy seal commander - also recently appeared on JRE and he created programmes for training. Willink claimed that these cops have a minimal amount of training and then they're sent out on the streets. The point being made was that having higher qualified, better trained officers would be the answer to these problems. Therefore investment should be the solution not defunding.

Rogan also questioned how many people would want to be cops at this moment in time, with many deciding on the career choice as a last resort. This also leads to people who aren't suited to the profession being put in these high pressure situations in the field.

Weinstein agreed more funding is the solution, although he feels that the anger which is causing people to spill out onto the streets hasn't been strictly caused by brutal policing alone. It is the result of a process that begins with economic and political phenomena.
