If you're going to win the lottery, make sure you actually win it. Howard Walmsley faked an £8.4million lottery win to impress his wife and stop her from leaving him. The fraud began with him mentioning a small win which would have bought him some time to pay off his debts before spiralling into him writing bounced cheques in a Jaguar dealership.

With his fake lottery win Walmsley managed to take out a number of loans and overdrafts but never actually managed to buy anything, not even his freedom. He was jailed for 3 years on 12 counts of deception in 1999.
