Jill Dando was one of the UK's most prominent journalists and presenters, until her murder on the 26th of April, 1999. Dando's body was discovered around 14 minutes after her murder, by neighbour Helen Doble outside the front door of her house. Police concluded that Dando had been shot once in the head, after being grabbed from behind by an unknown assailant. Another neighbour, Richard Hughes, noted that he'd heard Dando exclaim a cry as if she were "greeting a friend". He also made the only known sighting of the killer, a white, middle-aged male standing around 6 foot tall. A prolonged investigation took place, and a local man named Barry George was convicted and jailed, but later acquitted. Recently, further credence has been given to the theory that a Yugoslav terrorist group may have been involved in the murder, but the mystery remains unsolved 15 years later.
