8. Youre Horribly Lazy
When faced with a decision to take the stairs or the elevator, most people will take the latter, even if they're a fitness freak. This is probably a drop in the ocean compared to most people's pizza-and-Netflix binges, but it shows a fundamental bias we all have. Whilst we think that our increasing levels of inactivity are probably lazy, our ancestors would have seen it as a pretty smart move on our part. Evolutionarily speaking, conserving as much energy as possible will make you more likely to catch the deer/run from the lion. Ancient man would have thought that our habit of going for a run to be frankly insane. This instinct of inertia is what has driven us to invent all of the labour saving technology that we enjoy today. There is also
emerging research that suggests there might be a "laziness gene" or, more accurately, a mutation in the genes for physical activity that make them less effective. This could be because our romantic pairings don't often rely on picking the strongest, fastest candidate anymore, perhaps making it more likely that these "laziness mutations" are passed on - particularly as people with similar interests (i.e. not running around like a lunatic) tend to pair up. So, can't muster the energy to get off the sofa for another slice of pizza? Blame your ancestors.
