8. The Tommyknockers

Ever wondered what would happen if technology from an ancient alien civilisation was accidentally set off and began releasing a gas into the atmosphere that transformed humans into super-intelligent, telepathic shadows of their former selves? Well, Stephen King has.

The Tommyknockers is every bit as strange as it sounds. It's a long book, and King himself has expressed his disdain for it, but it does hold a certain charm. That charm lies in its strangeness, both among the other works of King and in fiction in general; its winding plot eventually comes to a satisfactory conclusion, but not without several scenes which are at once disturbing and amusing.

By his own admission, it's not one of King's best, but it is an entertaining example of one of the stranger corners of his imagination.
