7. Dolores Claiborne

Dolores Claiborne is, by no stretch of the imagination, a weird story. It is a well-written, tightly packed narrative which showcases King's immense talent at drawing a reader in, and as many of his other works, was adapted into a film of the same name.

Dolores Claiborne is an elderly housekeeper suspected of the murder of her employer. The book is written from her perspective as she tells her life story in an attempt to clear her name of the crime she is suspected of committing, instead opening the doors on years of suffering and repression.

It is strange in its dissonance: King's books usually have a supernatural core, or, at least, a flair of the unknown, but Dolores Claiborne has no real elements that fall into those categories. Instead, it is a tale that follows the remarkable life of one woman, and her story is one that would grip any fans of thriller fiction.
