Remember the above interview? He almost had us fooled. However David Letterman was having none of it, and for the most part neither were we. To really pull off the whole 'oh woe is me, I've fallen off the deep end" routine, you should probably be a crumpled up heap in the backstage, something more akin to Pete Dogherty or the latter days of Rip Torn; y'know, having a jug of vodka with your cornflakes and frequenting the local bank with a loaded gun every now and then. Phoenix did spark a whole lot of speculation around just how much of his appearance on the show was an act, yet it was only a few days after the Letterman interview that we all found out the entire thing was in service of his newest work I'm Still Here. This was a brilliantly conceived flick about the perception of the celebrity in the eyes of the public, and just how much the masses will watch another person's descent into madness in the name of entertainment. That, and it let Phoenix dabble in a rap career for a bit... so there's that.
