Lake Nyos is another crater lake, but is arguably even more deadly as one of the world's few exploding lakes.

Despite its setting the the beautiful rolling wilderness of Cameroon, Lake Nyos is responsible for the deaths of over 1,700 people, 3,500 livestock and uncounted wildlife.

The pocket of magma that sits beneath the lake slowly leaks carbon dioxide into the water, turning it into carbonic acid. This is usually not much of a problem but one day, in 1986, the lake suddenly released an enormous cloud of CO2.

The cloud silently suffocated everybody in the surrounding area, resulting in the first known natural asphyxiation disaster on this massive scale. Many of the survivors also suffered respiratory problems, skin lesions and paralysis.

Although "degassing tubes" have since been installed in the lake in an attempt to prevent this happening again, there is another risk on the horizon. The natural walls keeping the lake at the top of its volcano are weakening. Should they give out, the water of Lake Nyos will come crashing down, and even more deadly CO2 could be unleashed on the population.

Cause of death: Asphyxiation.
