11 Craziest Things About Living In Space
7. Killer Farts Could Be A Real Danger
You might think that you've experienced bad gas before after a particularly brutal curry, but that's nothing compared to the dangers of flatulence in outer space.
In 1969, NASA regarded farts as so much of a threat that it produced a study with the snappy title of, “Intestinal hydrogen and methane of men fed space diet.” This study was designed to look at the effects of having a number of organisms producing highly flammable gasses in an enclosed space.
The space diet is not like your average earth diet and has a propensity to causes severe flatulence in astronauts, NASA were legitimately concerned that this could lead to a potentially explosive situation.
Whilst today this isn't seen as quite the threat that it once was, what with the advanced ventilation systems aboard our space stations, it can still cause some problems.
A zero gravity environment can cause some pretty bad digestive issues, as the digestive system relies at least partially on gravity to force food through. Astronauts regularly suffer from trapped wind and it is impossible to burp in space as the gas in the stomach mingles with the liquid in the form of tiny bubbles.
