11 Crazy Festivals You Won't Believe Actually Exist

5. The Boryeong Mud Festival - South Korea

This is a relatively new phenomenon compared to some of the longer-established festivals on this weird and wonderful list, but since its inception in 1998 the Boryeong Mud Festival is now attended by millions of people every year, coming from all corners of the earth to flood a beach front just south of Seoul. Originally conceived as a way to market and promote the cosmetics made from the area€™s nutrient-rich mud, nowadays it€™s more like a two week long mud-themed party on the Daecheon seafront, complete with mud pools, mud slides, mud prisons and mud skiing competitions all taking place on a beautiful sunny beach. Luckily, one of the products they make from Boryeong€™s mud is sunblock. While protection from sun stroke is included, you do have to pay to use the showers, so they kind of have you by the proverbials with that one. That said, you don€™t actually need to get caked in mud to enjoy the festivities. Huge fireworks shows open and close the festival, with everything from parades to live music in between.
