4. The World Bog Snorkelling Championship - Wales
It's not entirely necessary to remind you about this, as weve all been eagerly awaiting its arrival with baited breath, but the 30th annual World Bog Snorkelling Championships is almost upon us. Due to take place on August 30 in Llanwrtyd, Wales, this crazy festival was named in Lonely Planets top 50 must-do things from around the world as recently as last year. What happens here is exactly what it says on the tin. Contestants dive into a 55 metre bog and try to complete two consecutive lengths in the quickest time possible. Along with their snorkels, the competitors must wear flippers and use them and them alone to complete the race anyone seen to be using conventional swimming strokes will be disqualified. The current world champion is a women from Surrey, 33-year-old Kirsty Johnson, who conquered the bog in an impressive 1 minutes 22.56 seconds, beating off fierce competition from American, German, French, Belgian, Swedish, Portuguese, Australian, South African and Kiwi hopefuls.
