12 Castles You Need To Visit In Great Britain

4. Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh castle is located on the cost of Northumberland was was built by the Normans in the 11th century. William II and his English army attempted to capture the castle but when William was taken prisoner, his wife was faced with the choice of continuing the fight or surrendering. She chose to surrender as she was threatened that if she didn't, her husband, the King of England, would be tortured and made blind. The castle currently belongs to the Armstrong family who allow it to be open for the public, and you can also get married there. As the castle is situated on the basalt outcrop on the edge of the North Sea, you can see across to the Farne Islands, Holy Island and the Cheviot Hills. Something to bear in mind if you are looking for a wedding venue...
