Many people spout nonsense claims that consumption of vitamin C is the best cure for the common cold, often in conjunction with a sales pitch of their supplement or vitamin C containing compound.

Of course, like many other entries in this list, multiple studies have been performed in order to verify this claim. All of these came to the conclusion that vitamin C does not cure the common cold.

A recent study, of over 11,000 individuals was conducted to test the therapeutic benefits of vitamin C. The study tested for duration and severity of the illness in those taking the vitamin and those who did not take any additional vitamins. Neither of these parameters showed any difference.

Vitamin C however, can be utilised by the immune system and thus can make it stronger, so those who may be under severe physical stress, or as with the previous entry are subject to cold climates may gain a small benefit if their immune systems are somewhat compromised, but not in a way that would stop you contracting the cold.

Moreover, the horrible feelings you get whilst you are suffering from a cold are actually caused by the immune system to help fight the virus. Therefore, strengthening the immune system may in fact make the symptoms much worse.
