12 Things You Didn't Know About Paul Walker

4. He Founded His Own Disaster Relief Organisation

Alongside his multitude of other endeavours, Walker was also a humanitarian at heart, founding the disaster relief organisation Reach Out Worldwide, notably heading out to the 2010 Chile and Haiti earthquakes to help provide aid, and dispatching teams of doctors out to help survivors of the 2010 Indonesian tsunami, as well as for tornado damage back in Alabama. Walker himself also earned an EMT qualification and even considered becoming a paramedic later in life, though again, sadly that option was cut short. On his decision to form ROWW, the actor said, "Because of my travels with work and pleasure, a lot of the times disasters would strike in areas that I'd been. You think of the faces €” they might not be people you're in contact with but you can't help but wonder how that family was you had dinner with. That stuff starts crossing your mind and you feel so helpless. I would be consumed with anger, like, 'F***! I wanna be there, I wanna do whatever I can.' One of my best friends had heard it too many times and ultimately he just held me accountable. He punked me out: 'So you gonna pack your bags and go to Haiti and help out or what?'" Again, though Walker promoted his organisation frequently, he often downplayed his own involvement, and as such many fans weren't even aware of his overt role with humanitarian aid until after his passing. Perhaps most tragically ironic of all is that Walker was at a fundraising event for ROWW when he briefly left and had his fatal car accident.
