5. He Bought A $9000 Engagement Ring For Someone He Didn't Know
One of the more heart-warming stories to emerge following the actor's death was a tremendous act of anonymous generosity to a complete stranger. Soldier Kyle Upham and his fiancee Kristen were shopping in a Santa Barbara jewelry store in 2004 when they got talking to the actor, who seemed particularly taken with the fact that Upham had just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. Upham and Kristen could not afford the ring they wanted, so left the store, only to be called up by an employee and informed that an anonymous party had put the cost of the ring on their own tab, to the tune of $9000. At Walker's request the clerk did not disclose the identity of the benefactor, though the two suspected that it had probably been him. Following the actor's death, the store's clerk Irene King confirmed that it was Walker who paid for the ring, and the fact that this only came out after Walker died is a testament again to his preference for maintaining a low profile when not working. That he had no hand in divulging his generous act makes it all the more poignant, and a further testament to his reputed good character.
