It's safe to say that, between The Decision and his bravado in the area of championship predictions before he'd ever played a game, Lebron James joining the Miami Heat did little to inflate his popularity. Nearly four years after leaving Cleveland and with consecutive NBA championships to his name though, none of that seems to matter. Hero or villain, James had as big a year as any celebrity in 2013. He's the fourth-highest paid athlete in the world according to Forbes and has found his growing endorsements nearly tripling his colossal salary. With his second straight league title, second straight NBA Finals MVP, and second career league MVP all coming in 2013, it's hard to argue that there was a more successful, well-compensated, or decorated athlete on the planet. Early in the 2013-14 campaign James' Heat are second in the Eastern Conference, and look to have limited competition in the effort to win their third title in as many years. Maybe those predictions weren't as bold as we initially thought.
