13 Famous People Who Died On Friday 13th

3. Andes Flight Disaster (October 13, 1972) - A Plane Crash Kills 29 People And Forces 16 Survivors To Resort To Cannibalism

The tale of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 is an extremely sad one - not only were 21 people killed when the plane crashed-landed in the Andes on Friday October 13, 1972, another eight perished as a result of an avalanche which swept through the mountains afterwards. With the Old Christians Club rugby union team from Montevideo, Uruguay, and their families on board, some survived the initial crash - and managed to remain alive until they were rescued more than two months later on December 23, 1972. The way 16 people managed to survive and then be rescued is gruesome, however. As a result of the snow and freezing temperatures in the mountains, the bodies of some of those who had died were preserved. With no food for miles upon miles, the 16 survivors turned to cannibalism in order to keep themselves alive. The 72-day ordeal of the survivors has been retold in the 1974 book and 1993 film Alive, revealing the true ordeal which they were forced to endure as a result of a plane crash on Friday 13th.
