2. Costa Concordia (January 13, 2012) - 32 Passengers Perish After Cruise Ship Capsizes On Friday 13th
The Costa Concordia disaster will go down in maritime history as one of the greatest tragedies to occur aboard a cruise ship. An Italian cruise ship carrying 4,252 people, the Costa Concordia capsized and then sank after suffering significant damage when it collided into rocks off the coast of the Tuscan island Isola del Giglio on Friday January 13, 2012. The initial impact had caused a blackout onboard and water immediately began flooding the engine, yet it took captain Francesco Schettino an hour before he declared an evacuation - which took a further six hours to complete. Unfortunately, 32 passengers died trapped on the ship - and Captain Schettino was found guilty of their manslaughter in February 2015, receiving a 16-year prison sentence as a result. Images of the capsized Costa Concordia remain some of the most powerful of the 21st Century.
