9. Cobblestones
There is a character in the modernist classic 100 Years Of Solitude who regularly eats dirt when she is upset, but in 2006, a girl from China took it to a whole other level.
The girl, from the city of Foshan, had a fight with her boyfriend and was understandably upset. Slightly less understandably, however, she decided that the best way to get her point across was to stop mid-row to eat some 20 or so cobblestones.
No, really.
She hoped that nature would take its course and she would be rid of the stones after a couple of days, but when that didn't happen and she soon began to clank whilst she walked, she finally decided to seek medical attention. Doctors eventually had to remove the stones surgically.
