6. Working For Your Dreams Instead Of Money
You're broke and looking for a job. Maybe you're still in school or have transitioned from a career that wasn't the right fit. You essentially have two choices, and most of us pick the logical one. You could work for your career, i.e. your dream job. To do this, however, may require you to humble yourself and take a lower-paying job or internship in order to make the dream a reality. That all sounds nice, but the other option is to pick a job that pays more. We often pick the job that pays more, believing that we'll always be able to shoot for our dreams later down the road. More money equals more freedom, right? But we learn later on that the job could lead to a dead-end, and we no longer have the freedom to go back and start from the bottom at something else that fulfils what we really want to do. For students, it turns out that working in food service doesn't look as good on a resumé as taking on internships pertaining to your career. When you finally do graduate, you're stuck with a bachelor's degree without any relevant experience to back it up. The lesson, of course, is that the logical choice isn't always the right one, and it's sometimes better to sacrifice money for overall happiness. In fact, what's rational in the short-term (picking a job that pays more) may actually be irrational in the long-term (you don't want to be doing this for the rest of your life).
