14 Most Haunted Hotels In The World

4. Karosta Prison Hostel

Location: Latvia What could be scary about a prison themed hotel? Well, this hotel was actually converted into a prison in the 20th Century and was used by Nazi and Soviet soldiers. The amount of people who died in here is staggering, before the majority of them were shot, they were tortured mercilessly. During the Second World War, Nazi soldiers kept Latvian prisoners here and in one of the rooms that was used for solitary confinement are the words 'izeja no elles'. This translates as 'exit from hell.' Staff indulge guests about strange occurrences that have happened in the hotel such as lightbulbs being unscrewed from their sockets, doors opening by their own accord and even the sound of chains being heard from the depths of the shadows. Guests have seen the ghost of a woman who hanged herself roaming the corridors and in case you're wondering, the staff treats guests like prisoners. That's right, it still looks how it did during the war, all of the cells are still intact. Guests have to sign a disclaimer before they stay there in the Communist-esque conditions, being treated like a prisoner with punishments including physical exercise and cleaning duties. You pay for a thin mattress on the cold, hard floor and your meals are similar to what the prisoners would have eaten all of those years ago. It's safe to say that this experience isn't for everyone.
