Space Oddity, Heroes and Fame - these are just three of the many hits which sing-songwriter David Bowie has had down the years, making the Brixton-born star one of the best-loved in Britain. Bowie - who has sold an estimated 140million albums worldwide and who was voted No 29 in BBC's 2002 poll of the 100 Greatest Britons - is known to hold leftist views and he rejected both a CBE in 2000 and a knighthood in 2003. This despite the fact British rock stars Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney have both accepted becoming "sirs" at different times. So dismissive of the offer of knighthood was Bowie in fact that he said: "I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for."
