15 WTF Corporate Tweets That Definitely Got Someone Fired
13. DiGiorno Pizza Makes Light Of Domestic Violence
Speaking of not checking the hashtag, DiGiorno did not learn from the failure of Entenmann's and made a similar mistake in 2014. After the infamous video of Ray Rice punching his fiance leaked, thousands of Twitter users shared their experiences with abusive relationships using the hashtag "#WhyIStayed." This was a way for women everywhere to stand up against those who were victim blaming and targeting Rice's fiance for staying with him. Naturally, a brand of frozen pizza had something to say about that.
In the midst of all these emotional anecdotes, there was this tweet from DiGiorno: "#WhyIStayed You had pizza." The company deleted it within minutes and apologized, saying they didn't read the hashtag before tweeting. What's weird about this one, though, is that it really seems from the tweet like they knew the subject matter and were intentionally making light of it. What on Earth did they think "WhyIStayed" meant? Was this "not checking the hashtag" business just their excuse for a joke made in poor taste?
To their credit, DiGiorno didn't simply apologize once and move on. Whoever was managing their account proceeded to respond to every single angry customer with a sincere apology, and they didn't just copy and paste the same one over and over, either. It's okay, DiGiorno, we forgive you (but your pizza still sucks).
