15 WTF Corporate Tweets That Definitely Got Someone Fired
12. Kenneth Cole Makes Joke About Cairo Protests
One of the most important stories of 2011 was the uproar in Cairo, where thousands of citizens called for the removal of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and violent clashes resulted in nearly 1,000 deaths and 6,000 injuries. It was perhaps the first time the importance of Twitter was fully realized, as activists used the social media platform to coordinate and spread the word about demonstrations.
But was fashion house Kenneth Cole going to miss an opportunity to exploit this violence? Of course not. Their tweet in the midst of this developing revolution read, "Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online." Cole was apparently fully behind that joke, as it's signed with "KC" indicating he wrote it himself.
This case isn't some understandable blunder like an intern sending out a tweet without checking the hashtag. No, Cole obviously fully understood what was going on in Cairo, and he decided to use the situation to advertise a clothing sale. Probably not the best idea, huh? The company apologized by saying they didn't intend to make light of a serious situation, even though that is literally the only reason the tweet exists.
