15 Mind-Blowing Pictures Of Space

3. Dione And Saturn

As much as this looks like a piece of modern art, it's actually an image of Saturn's moon, Dione. It was captured here by the Cassini spacecraft that is currently in orbit around the gas giant.

The moon measures around 1100km and its many craters, possibly caused by collisions with Saturn's rings in the past, are clearly visible.

The rings themselves can only bee seen as a razor edge here, as we are looking at them almost perfectly side-on, but their shadows are streaked across the planet's surface at the bottom of the picture.

Cassini took the photograph during one of its flybys of Saturn's features, one of many planned before the little space probe finally dives into the planet's atmosphere in 2017.
