15 Surprising Hidden Meanings Behind Rude Words

5. Bugger

What it means: Similar to crap, a curt expression of annoyance. Very, very English. When to use it: When a little kid is annoying you but you don't want to call them the C word in front of their parents so you have to lie about how you find them endearing when you actually can't stand them, "oh that little... bugger." Where it came from: This word is derived from Anglo Norman 'bougre' which was given to heretics. However the term wasn't sexualised until the 13th century after Pope Innocent III supported a crusade that led to the slaughter of around 20,000 civilians. This was an attempt to spread Catholicism and eradicate Christianity and thus, the Catholic Church were accused of sodomy and unorthodox sexual practises.
