17 Famous Phrases And Where They Come From

13. "Let Your Hair Down"

What it means: Try to stop being so stressed out, let loose and enjoy yourself. Where it comes from: Appearances are everything, and this was no exception to the aristocrats of the 17th and 18th centuries. Fashion choices and hairstyles dictated to others of how wealthy and respected people were in society. The more extravagant, the better, and this applied for hairstyles. The bigger the better. Wigs and accessories were used to create a style so lavish that it hurt the heads of those who adorned them. It would sometimes take hours to get ready and was often quite painful, so it was a relief when they could actually let their hair down at the end of the day.
