When it opened in 1959 the iconic Disneyland Monorail was the very first mass transit, daily used monorail in the Western Hemisphere.
Walt Disney wanted a monorail transport system to act as "the highway in the sky" for when the park opened in 1955. It wasn't until 1961 that the track was extended to include the Disneyland Hotel.
