Despite the common misconception, dinosaurs were not the first type of prehistoric reptile. Before dinosaurs came the archosaurs (or "ruling lizards"), the pelycosaurs (or "bowl/axe lizards") and therapsids (or "mammal-like lizards"). These ancient reptiles lived for about 100million years before the dinosaurs even came into existence.
