11. He Suggested A Joint US-Soviet Space Mission To The Moon

In May 1961, Kennedy promised that the USA would land a man on the moon by the end of the decade - yet just two years later he became concerned that it was proving far too costly for one nation to undertake alone. So, during the height of the Cold War, Kennedy suggested to the United Nations General Assembly that the US and the USSR could collaborate resources in order to have a man step foot on the moon. In September 1963, he said: "Why should man's first flight to the moon be a matter of national competition? Why should the United States and the Soviet Union, in preparing for such expeditions, become involved in immense duplications of research, construction and expenditure?" Neil Armstrong was surely grateful that JFK's speech never came to anything...
