17. Explaining What A Jitty Is
If you travel around the UK and visit towns and cities in the different regions you'll soon notice how much variety there is to dialects - betraying our more provincial-minded past, each county seems to have its own rules, where obscure colloquialisms seem to strive to confuse the outsider as much as possible. Derby is no exception to this rule and over the centuries its residents have developed their own unique lingo for a wide variety of random things. Perhaps one of the most notable is the local word for alleyway, known to Derbeians as a jitty. While someone from Yorkshire might insist that it's actually a snicket and Liverpudlians might stake their claim to the name jigger, Derbeians know the truth - a jitty is a jitty is a jitty. End of discussion.
