Water features are often a pleasing way to improve the ambience of a town centre, the flowing liquid offering a soothing visual display at one with nature for the bored worker lunching on a sandwich in the city centre. At least, that's the theory. The good intentions might have been there when Derby's fountain was constructed in the market place but unfortunately the end result had more in common with the Derby ram statue than it does with the Fontana di Trevi in Rome. Looking remarkably similar to a urinal it has been a source of drunken amusement and general derision ever since its installation.
