Driving through South Wales is beautiful. Rolling hills and forests and landmarks like the impressive Castle Coch nesting in the side of a hill as you drive into the valleys. The same can be said by travelling by train, with one exception, the ugly mud flats of Newport.

This is not a dig at the city of Newport itself, but this fact cannot be denied. If you come in by train and cross the bridge at Newport, the sight is not what you might call beautiful. Vast mud flats and a river that looks more brown than blue, it certainly doesn't conjure up the majestic waterways of South Wales.
