10. Jatinga - India
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otvmwDwGZds Jatinga is a small village in India which is most well known for its mysterious number of bird deaths and what makes this story even more bizarre is that the deaths only occur between September and October when there is no moon in the sky and between the hours of 6-9:30 pm. Although the deaths are often referred to as suicides this isn't actually the case. It is in fact the locals of Jatinga who kill the birds, as in earlier times they believed that the birds were spirits sent from the sky to terrorise them. So, although the birds are not killing themselves it has been said that after the monsoon season when these killings take place, the birds seem to become disoriented and confused and therefore fly towards the light of the city where they are killed with bamboo poles by the locals. Due to the large number of birds being killed each year, wildlife societies have been sent out to the village in order to educate the locals and to explain that it is highly unlikely that the birds have been sent to terrorise them. Fortunately, this has brought the deaths down by 40% but many people still continue to believe the old story, which has now brought many tourists to the area.
