20 Totally Bizarre Places You Won't Believe Actually Exist

1. Aokigahara - Japan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FDSdg09df8 Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan and its beauty can be admired from miles around. At the base of the mountain lies a thick forest, known for being eerily quiet and having an odd absence of wildlife. But this isn't all that the forest is famed for because Aokigahara is in fact the world's second most popular place for suicides (after San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge). Often dubbed "The perfect place to die," the forest hosts a number of signs with phrases such as "Don't suffer alone. Please talk with someone," and "Life is an important gift we receive from our parents". However the majority of people who enter the forest with the intention of suicide, succeed in their attempts. It has been suggested that the reason for the forest becoming so popular for suicides is due to a novel named Kuroi Jukai by Japanese author, Seicho Matsumoto, in which two young lovers kill themselves deep in the forest. When it became widespread knowledge that people were killing themselves in the forest, the Japanese government decided to employ workers to sweep the forests in search of bodies. And, if this wasn't already bad enough, the workers must then bring the bodies to a special building and decide between them who will spend the night in the room with the corpses, as it is thought that leaving the bodies alone is bad luck. Due to the rising number of suicides in the forest each year, there are now patrols in order to spot those who are intending on killing themselves, however the real reason as to why this spot has gained such popularity for those thinking of suicide still remains somewhat of a mystery.
