16. Sheffield Ski Village
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB9TCXG1XPE When Sheffield Ski village opened in the late 1980's it was set to be Europe's biggest artificial ski resort and for many years it was just that. The village acted as a training ground for those who treated skiing as a hobby but also Olympians and other professional winter sportspeople. But in early 2012, a fire raged through the ski village causing much destruction even wiping away the main building of the village. Soon afterwards the destruction that had been caused was cleared up and repairs began although no one could find any real reason for the fire. Then in May of the same year two more fires, thought to be caused deliberately caused even greater damage to the site and it was shut down. A year on, another fire took place at the site, long after it had been abandoned but once again it appeared that there wasn't any cause for the fires leaving it desolated. Whether the site was just unlucky or whether it was deliberately being burnt down by arsonists, the thought of an abandoned site is always pretty creepy. Especially when it is a ski village with many of the signs intact, skating penguin-aids hanging around and the slopes still in place as though everyone just upped and left after some bizarre happening.
