17. The Titanic Forged A Bitter Feud Between Doyle And George Bernard Shaw
Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw was never one to keep his opinions to himself - and his controversial musings on the sinking of the Titanic led Conan Doyle to publicly admonish him. Shaw was unconvinced by the scores of heroic stories that had arisen in the aftermath of the tragedy, claiming in an article in the Daily News and Leader that the disaster had created "an explosion of outrageous romantic lying". Conan Doyle was horrified by Shaw's statements and responded a week later saying: "... It is a pitiful sight to see a man of undoubted genius using his gift in order to misrepresent and decry his own people." Meow!
