8. Being The Bit Of The Great North Run Nobody Mentions

Thanks to the mega-fame of the North East's most notorious half-marathon, everyone knows that it starts just over the Tyne Bridge and ends in South Shields on the cliff side. The images of the event every year tend to focus on the stunning vision of thousands of competitors from all walks running across the river. But nobody ever mentions the fact that a fair majority of the race is run in Gateshead, where locals line the streets to wave everyone on. That, unfortunately, is because Gateshead is where you hit the wall three or four times: and it's unlikely you'll ever fondly remember the stage of any race when you began to breathe out of your backside.
