2. My Water Damaged Phone Can Be Fixed With Rice
I have no idea how it started, but the idea is clever; put your liquid-damaged phone in rice and the water will be soaked up and good as new. The theory behind it is similar to cooking of rice, if you put rice in water, the rice will soak in the water and expand. People are hopeful that the rice can do the same thing that it does when you are cooking it, which also explains why so many people believe this myth to be true. This one is the most interesting, because it's not being fueled by a marketing campaign or from a company - the push seems to be coming from actual people. Through videos on Youtube, and comments on forums, the first tip most people read about on the Internet after they have damaged their phone is to place the phone in rice, some call for it to be a container, others say it must be in a ziplock bag, but in one way or another the first tip anyone gets is to put their phone in rice.
Fact: The sad truth is that while Rice can soak up the excess liquid around the phone, it doesn't work for the liquid already in the handset. The Liquid in the handset corrodes the phone and no amount of rice is going to extract the water from the phone. The only way to truly clear the water damage out is to soak it in an ultrasonic chemical bath with can actually take the liquid damage out of the phone. On top of this, parts that have been damaged by the liquid need to be replaced. However, after this, the phone can pretty much be as good as new, which actually leads me onto my next myth.
