6 Best Broadway Musicals by Decade

Honorable Mention: "Godspell"

Godspell This musical literally changed my life. It forced me to reevaluate my Christianity as a way of life and not just a once-in-awhile hobby. The central message of the show is best illustrated by the very beginning of the first act, when God essentially asks the world, "What are you people doing??" and then Jesus comes to the rescue like Superman (only he's wearing a clown outfit, for some reason). It's not quite as powerful as its fellow '70s predecessor, "Jesus Christ Superstar," but the message is still important: Life is a gift from God that shouldn't be squandered. And I got all that from a Jesus wearing a giant, red clown nose.

Michael Perone has written for The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore City Paper, The Island Ear (now titled Long Island Press), and The Long Island Voice, a short-lived spinoff of The Village Voice. He currently works as an Editor in Manhattan. And he still thinks Michael Keaton was the best Batman.
