7 Bizarre Conspiracy Theories You'd Probably Never Believe
4. J K Rowling Is Just An Actress
How can one person, from the depths of Nowheresville, single-handedly go on to become one of the wealthiest, most successful authors of this or any other generation, all from writing a series of children's books? That's the basis for this conspiracy theory proposed by Norwegian filmmaker Nine Grunfeld, who suggests that it's suspicious how one person can sell over 250 million books over the course of a decade. For this to happen, she believes it must have been the work of several people all working together. While it may seem like she's pulled this out of thin air, there was actually a precedent set by another series of highly successful books in the Nancy Drew series, which was penned by a committee of ghost writers and credited to the fictional author Carolyn Keene. So maybe there is some truth in it? According to this site, Grunfeld says she is nothing more than a talented actress hired by the books' publishers, Bloomsbury, most likely to put a fictional face to the best-selling series of books, which is exactly what happens in a Simpsons episode that clearly owes a lot to the theory. The theory has been met with some ridicule, no doubt mostly from Harry Potter fans, but most notably from the books' Norwegian translator, Torstein Bugge Hoverstad as well as publisher Tom Dahl. Other publishers have also come forward to deny the claims and state they have met the author in person and suggest that Grunfeld's theory is pure speculation and nothing else.
