7. Same Sex Couples Can't Raise Children

Please won't someone think of the children?

The debate as to whether kids raised by same-sex couples rages on, thinly veiled under a veneer of science. Those who oppose same-sex marriage (whose motives I am not going to attempt to understand here), often argue that a gay or lesbian couple cannot properly raise a child because there is no distinct "mother" or "father" figure.

There have been some studies published that have found links with same-sex marriages and, for example, poor school academic performance. In many of these studies, however, they make the fatal flaw of not controlling for other variables such as, I don't know, comparing kids coming from a foster care system to those who have been raised by their biological families.

In all, there have been overwhelmingly more studies that have found that kids from same-sex families do just as well as those in heterosexual ones, accounting for any mitigating circumstances. What's more, they found that there is little to no statistical evidence to suggest that gay parents raise gay kids, just in case that was what you were worried about.

Generally speaking, kids would be much better off being adopted by a loving gay couple than remaining in an overstretched foster care system, waiting for a heterosexual couple to come along.
