7 Horribly Toxic Things In The Ocean That Are Scarier Than Sharks

1. Stonefish

You might have heard of this one, but have you ever seen one? Even if you have you might not realise it as they are experts of camouflage. As the name suggests, they do indeed look a lot like a stone. Common throughout the Indian Ocean (like most ridiculously poisonous things seem to be for some reason), there are 5 different species of stonefish, including the very aptly named Synanceia horrida. Some of the largest ones can grow up to about 60 centimeters. You€™ll usually get stung by one just walking around in the water, as they generally prefer to hide in very shallow environments. If you€™re unlucky enough to step on one you€™ll definitely know it though. Around 20 cases are reported every year in Australia alone, and the sting is incredible painful and sometimes lethal. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, heart problems and paralysis. You don€™t even necessarily have to go in the water to get stung though, as they can survive up to 24 hours out of the sea and beach-goers often step on them there. There is also an anti-venom for stone fish, unlike most of this other nasty stuff. So if you absolutely have to go and get in the way of something, probably go for stone fish.
