6. Priest Stabs Nun 31 Times
In 1980, a day before Easter, 71-year-old nun Margaret Ann Pahl was found dead in the chapel of Mercy Hospital, Toledo. She had been stabbed 31 times in what appeared to be a ritualistic murder. Nine of those stabbing marks were in the shape of an upside-down cross. At the time, Reverend Gerald Robinson was the main suspect, but after interrogations that led nowhere and insufficient evidence, the case went cold for more than 20 years.
In 2003, a woman unrelated to the murder came forth from Toledo who accused the Reverend and other priests of sexually abusing her when she was a child. This reopened the old case, and using new techniques the investigators matched a letter opener belonging to Father Robinson with the imprints left on the altar cloth that was covering the nun at the time of her death. Three more people stepped forward and placed the Reverend close to the chapel at the time of the murder. In 2006, he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. He would have been up for parole in 2016 but died in 2014, aged 76.
