Gay marriage is a highly sensitive matter in most parts of the world, especially when it involves the church. Most religions are opposed to it, and the Baptist churches across Alabama are firmly rooted in this belief. Richard Lee Shahan, a former pastor of the church, admitted to being gay. So he stabbed his wife to death in order to marry his boyfriend.

Having married a woman, the pastor was faced with what seemed like a difficult decision. After sending an email to one of his lovers in which he told him that there was only one way to become ”legally single”, his wife was found dead in their home. In an email of her own, Karen Shahan, the wife, had admitted to knowing about his husband's double life and claimed to have made him choose.

According to the police, the reverend's alibi didn't hold, and although he was sent to prison, he had to be released with no charge on a technicality. Shortly after, he tried to flee to Kazakhstan via Germany, in order to finally settle down in the United Kingdom and marry his boyfriend. He was arrested for attempting to escape justice.
