7 Mind-Blowing Things We Learned From Joe Rogan's Charles Manson Podcast With Tom O'Neill

3. The Secret History of the MK Ultra

If we were to tell you that there was a US government agency that used drugs as a way of controlling the minds of their subjects, you'd probably think it was the plot to some Hollywood blockbuster. Well, you'd be right as the likes of The Manchurian Candidate and American Ultra all touched on this. However, this program was a real thing and was actually somewhat successful.

O'Neill does a brilliant job of explaining all the major details about the MK Ultra program, including their overall objective and why it was such a controversial topic when it was first exposed in 1974. Not only were the doctors and researchers involved in the project using LSD on unknowing subjects to figure out how it would effect them, they were also attempting to create killers who would act like normal citizens until they were somehow triggered into violence. According to O'Neill, it's very likely that Charles Manson was one of the most successful test subjects to come out of the MK Ultra program.

The author goes into far more detail about this during the podcast, explaining how it was created by the CIA, why there's so little information on the program and the horrific Jimmy Shaver case which resulted in the death of a small girl by an airman who claimed to remember nothing about it.
